Medley

What Medley can change on Mac, iPhone and iPad

Medley on a Mac can add, remove, rename and delete in your own playlists. Apple lets iPhone and iPad apps only add songs and make playlists.

Medley reads your playlists the same way everywhere. What it can change depends on what Apple allows apps to do on each device.

On a Mac, Medley asks Music to make each change, so the first change asks for permission to control Music. On iPhone and iPad, Apple lets apps add songs to your playlists but not take them out, rename them or delete them.

Your playlists sync through Apple Music, so a change made in Medley on your Mac reaches your iPhone and iPad as Music syncs it.

What Medley does instead on iPhone and iPad

  • Merging two playlists makes a new playlist with every song from both. The two originals stay until you delete them in Music. See Merging and folding playlists.
  • Folding one playlist into another adds the missing songs. The old playlist stays for you to delete in Music.
  • Review cards that only remove songs, such as doubles, say “Taking songs out needs Medley on your Mac”.
  • Put Back in History says it works in Medley on your Mac.
  • Unticking a playlist on an artist’s page says to untick it on your Mac.
  • A playlist you made in Medley and no longer want can be deleted in Music.

After a merge or fold on iPhone, a card in Review says what was made and what is left to do, with Open in Music.

Playlists Medley never changes

Medley changes only your own playlists. It leaves alone:

  • playlists saved from Apple Music, such as Essentials and Replay
  • smart playlists
  • Favourite Songs, which Music fills with every song you star
  • My Shazam Tracks

If you try, Medley says the playlist isn’t one of yours and leaves it as it is.

The Demo Library

The Demo Library is made up, so changes to it go nowhere. Switch to your own music in Settings ▸ Library ▸ Use My Music Instead.

If a change doesn’t go through

Medley says why, in plain words. The common cases on a Mac:

  • Medley isn’t allowed to control Music. Turn Music on for Medley in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Automation.
  • Music isn’t open. Open Music, then try again.
  • Music took too long to answer. Try again in a moment.

Adding a song from the Apple Music catalogue, such as a Shazam or a Grow suggestion, needs you to be signed in to Apple Music with a subscription.

Merging and folding playlists Bring two overlapping playlists together, with the change shown first and a copy saved to History. How it works on a Mac, and on iPhone and iPad. History and Put Back Medley keeps a copy of your playlists each day and before every change it makes, for 90 days. See what changed and put a playlist back as it was. Review Doubles, near-copies, playlists worth merging, withdrawn and skipped songs, one card at a time. You decide each one, and Not Now sets it aside.
