Aurora

Sizes and export formats

How Made For chooses the size, what the preview options do, and which file formats Aurora writes.

A wallpaper is drawn fresh at whatever size is asked for, so the same design is as sharp on a phone as on an 8K display.

Made For

Made For sets the export size, the shape of the preview and the shape of the gallery’s tiles. It is in the Studio’s controls and in Settings ▸ Export.

It starts as the device you are using and follows it, so an iPhone makes tall pictures at its own resolution and a Mac makes wide ones. Choose another device or size to make a wallpaper for something else. Sizes go up to 8K.

What can be exported

ChoiceWhat you get
Export Light…One image, the light version
Export Dark…One image, the dark version
Export Light and Dark…Both, as two images
Export Dynamic Wallpaper…One HEIC holding both, which macOS switches with Light and Dark Mode

On iPhone and iPad, exports go through the share sheet. Export Wallpapers… on a collection renders every wallpaper in it.

Formats

Exports are 10-bit HEIC or 16-bit PNG, in Display P3. Gradients are dithered so they do not band. Choose the format in Settings ▸ Export.

The preview

The preview options change only how the Studio presents a wallpaper. They do not affect what is exported.

  • For a Mac size, Menu Bar and Dock draws both over the preview, at the size they would be on that screen.
  • For an iPhone or iPad size, Lock Screen draws the clock over it.
  • The preview can sit inside a drawn outline of the device it is for.

On a Mac, Shown In can use pictures of real Macs instead, if you have the Frames device pictures installed. Point Aurora at their folder once in Settings ▸ Preview.
